Hopi Ear Candling
What is Hopi Ear Candling?
Very simply, it is the use of Hopi Ear Candles to relieve ear, sinus, nose, throat and head problems as well as stimulate the lymph system and the metabolism of the body.
Although there is evidence that many ancient civilisations used ear candle treatments it was mainly through the Hopi Indians of North Arizona that this treatment became more widely known. Hopi means "peaceful people" and for many centuries the Hopi lived in harmony with nature and Mother Earth. The candles were traditionally used by Shaman healers and by the Indians in healing rituals and ceremonies, to cleanse and harmonise energy fields and to drive out negative energies as well as a physical clearance therapy for problems relating to the ear, nose and throat.
What does it treat?
Thermo-auricular therapy should be considered for:
-
Irritations in the ears (otitis)
-
Catarrh and sinusitis
-
Glue ear (although not if grommets are in place)
-
Colds, flu and sore throats
-
Rhinitis/hay fever
-
Noises in ear - tinnitus
-
Excessive excitement and stress
-
Relief of pressure before flying or diving.
NB Hopi ear candles will not be used if there is a perforated ear drum or infection in the ear.
What are Hopi Ear Candles?
The candles are hollow tubes made from organic linen impregnated with beeswax, honey,
St John's Wort and medicinal herbs such as sage and chamomile. They have a filter towards the bottom which prevents any liquid wax or candle residue from entering the ear. The candles work on a chimney principle, drawing many impurities to the surface. They also equalise the pressure in the head and ears and the healing vapour can protect and soothe irritation, stimulate the lymph glands and so the immune system.
What happens during a treatment?
You will lie on the couch with your head comfortably to one side and I will place the lighted candle carefully in your ear. I will then place my hands gently around the base of the candle, protecting your head, but there is absolutely no danger and no possibility of burning. The candle is extinguished before it reaches my hands and so a long time before it could reach your head. After repeating on the other ear you will receive a gentle, healing head and face massage (with or without oils) that will enhance the effects of the candles.
Does it hurt?
No. As the candle burns you may experience gentle, reassuring warmth, and you will hear a pleasantly soft crackling sound - like a distant sparkler, or a seashell.

· Try to reduce stressful situations
· Avoid showering for as long as possible for maximum benefit of oils
· After Hopi Ear Candling you may experience mild cold-like symptoms, as this is caused the draining of your tubes. The severity of these symptoms will depend on the amount of blockage, so these symptoms do reduce if you continue with regular maintenance treatments.
Ok I’m interested, where will I need to go?
You don’t go anywhere, I come to you.
What will I need to provide?
All you need to provide is a relaxing, warm and private area within your home. Somewhere you’ll not be disturbed by others or a ringing phone. Preferable an area with low lighting as this helps you relax more, but this is not necessary. I will need quite a bit of space for my massage table, about the same space as a 3 seated sofa and enough space to walk round it (minimum 2 sides) and access to an electrical outlet for my MP3 player so we can play some relaxing therapeutic music.
How long will my treatment take?
Your treatment will be around 25 minutes for candling and another 10 minutes for neck, shoulder, & Face massage with sinus drain. In addition there is the time it takes to set up the couch, your consultation and then to pack up at the end so I will be in your home for around 1 to 1.5 hours. Your first session could be around 20 minutes longer due to the in-depth consultation needed.
